There is normally a jet stream from west to east. I normally gauge it by the flight times from Perth to Sydney. Perth -> Syd around 3hr 30min and Syd -> Perth normally 4hr 10min but lately, the trips I have been on are pushing 5hrs coming back and as fast as 3:10 going to Syd on a 747. Occasionally, the plane has had to travel down to Melbourne first before heading west to stay away from it.
Good luck with the cold. Don't forget to post some snowfall photos in the terrestrial section if you get them. Snow is rare here in Australia and my next o/seas trip will be targetted to catch a northern hemisphere winter.
