I have long held doubts as to whether 1 has any precedence over 2.

A very anthropocentric view Bert, and your doubts are pure speculation unless you can provide a link to refereed and peer-reviewed scientific papers. Contrary to popular belief, 1 and 2 are not in conflict and there is no conundrum. Both fit nicely within the standard cosmological model. Or not....
