I think you hit the nail on the head Ken. In the Oz Alps I could see thick dense "cloud" along the horizon at sunset and poor visibility during the day even on clear days. Makes sense that it would carry light pollution further. Lake Mountain is about the same distance from Melbourne as Falls Creek is from Wodonga, but on 4 occasions I've been to L.M., the skies were at least as good as if not better than at F.C.
