Peter, thanks for posting . This design would probably suit my own situation. Photo attached.
Question, The top sliding board which pushes against the pier to help stabalise the cover. Is it fixed in place with some sort of catch or pins?
Suggestion, if a similar board with a couple of fly screened holes in it (for airflow) was placed on the bottom level as well, it might keep little visitors out. Snakes, frogs etc.
