Hi James, it's just a natural part of the yearly cycle.
The queen will leave with half of the bees with her and they go off and start a new hive.
A new queen will then hatch in the old hive and it is renewed and life goes on.
If you can catch the queen in time and remove her and then introduce a new and younger queen you can actually stop the swarming process.
I find it easier to let it happen and hopefully catch the swarm, that way I get myself a new hive and a new supply of honey.
