The carbon footprint for a dog is about 2 landcruisers
The carbon footprint for a cat is about a VW Golf.
The devastation a cat causes is quite horrific - 2000 wild animals a year for an unrestrained cat.
Terriers do ok on rats and mice, but don't bother much with other animals.

Personally I think the time for large dogs in the burbs is over - everyone in my area seems to have at least two large dogs - it does keep the burglars away but it's a bit nasty for the environment. Cats of course don't stray into dog yards so at least the smaller animals and ground nesters are surviving.
Carbon tax on Dogs??? Well it may be coming.
