Stephen, I was very lucky with the Thornbill, he seemed quite happy to be foraging in the bark of the tree and kept hoping around it in front of me.
Chris, I really like the 100-400mm. It goes on all my walks now. I still find it works better to get quite close to the subject. I do sometimes wonder about whether the 400L would be better from the point of view of being able to put a 1.4X TC on it and get a longer reach, but I imagine that would really need a monopod and I like to go hand held. And I wouldn't like to lose the light with the TC. I think the thing that really swayed me to the zoom was the realisation that once I got a really good lens, the kit 55-250 zoom would be a disappointment and I'd have to get even more good glass to get the shorter focal lengths. I'd have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this combination.
