Strange you should ask!! After years of procrastination and false starts, just last night I found my first variable stars. It was pretty easy really, especially as I used GOTO.
I looked for three targets and located two, the other one I just couldn't get the field to match the chart. I didn't actually do a mag estimate but one was about mag 7 and the other mag 10.5-11. The weather looks good so I'm hoping that the first actual brightness estimate will be tonight. If I can just do 1-2 per night to start with I can work my way up to doing dozens - he says hopefully.
