I attach tripod ball heads direct to the dovetail.. with a solid bolt through into the tripod head mine feel rock solid? I've drilled out some 3/8" holes through my dovetail bars but sometimes just use 1/4" bolts as well.
With telephoto lenses I'll generally attach the collar around the lens direct to the dovetail, no tripod head. Even more rock solid.
