I don't think it is the total background as being red tinted, just the top and that is the hydrogen in the area. It only shows up in the red channel.
The black are just one of those things. This whole part of the sky I have been looking at lately has lots of this really inky black stuff everywhere. I am not sure how I make it grey given what happens to the rest of the area. I had the same problem when I did Barnard 92/93. It just did not want go from black to grey.
