I have often wondered what is the difference between a real virus and a computer virus - and really, there is not much. They are both methods of transmitting information about how to replicate themselves. The one major difference is that the real virus is able to change its own 'code' by natural selection, whereas the computer virus (mostly) relies on a programmer to do the same.
there are many people who argue that viruses should not be considered 'life' - but are a gray area between alive and not-alive. You could argue the same thing for computer viruses.
but whatever - what a fantastic breakthrough - lets hope it passes all the hurdles to get it out of the lab.
You don't have link to the story do you Ken?
