Yes, I know..

Good example is Stanislaw Lem and his "Solaris"
Book is ... well, it was out of this world (at least for me, then, 16 yo when I read it first time).
As for movies based on this novel..
Tarkowsky's version was pretentious, very different, somewhat slow but quite good - a bit of acquired taste. A VERY hard task to put it in the new media
The Hollywood version was waste of celluloid tape (and waste of watching time)
