For most of the history of the planet, especially the last 550Ma, the CO2 content of the atmosphere and the average temp of the planet have been higher than what they are now. A small amount of CO2 will raise the temp in the "greenhouse" or container. Whether it's in ppm or l/m^3. CO2 is a strong absorber of long wave IR, which is what is doing all the heating. Water vapour and methane are even better absorbers of LIR than CO2.
