Its an interesting topic really.

I agree the only colour I have noticed visually through scopes is a touch of green and as you say in M42.

But with colour digital images where sensitivity and long exposure shows up the actual colours its a different scenario. Green of course is one of the 3 primary colours but no stars are green and nebulas are not green. So if green is showing up (unless its narrowband) then there is an imbalance.

Green is also the colour where light pollution shows up most.
