It depends on what you call a constellation. The constellations all started as asterisms, however, they have since been defined to have borders, and all that is within the borders is in the constellation.

The asterism still exists, however. The answer to how many stars are in the asterism is finite but possibly subject to some debate. The answer to how many are in the constellation will be very much larger, may not be finite and will also be subject to some debate unless a limit to the magnitude of the stars is specified.
