You don't need make believe to find wierd and amazing creatures
My personal favourite is this
sea slug that eats algae when it is young, steals some DNA from said algae, and turns green then can photosynthesise. From this point on it can go for months without food surviving off sunlight!
It's an animal/plant hybrid
