The beauty really of median combine is it reduces noise. It fades out the satellite trails, gets rid of the cosmic ray hits etc. Sum does not. Its accumulative whereas median is averaging. So one image with a high number in one spot not on the others caused by noise gets reduced with every extra image taken. Some people like sum. It probably gives absolute maximum resolution but only if your subs are pretty clean or you use the healing tool more to clean up artifacts at the end.
