A dark sky is always optimal, but I'm able to nab many targets right here in suburbia, including Centaurus A galaxy on a good night (albeit more like a little faint smudge). That's why star clusters (particularly bright ones) are so much fun through binos, they don't particularly care if there is a full moon or light pollution.
