At the risk of being pelted with virtual rotten tomatoes, let me explain a couple of things. Moderators have to protect the interests of all forum members, and the site itself.
The whole issue is about respect for other people and their work. Some months ago, a forum member posted a dso pic of a planetary nebula, and another member thought it was cute to post a photoshop created picture of the same dso in the same thread.
This photoshop picture got deleted by moderators for the reason that it was inappropriate to take the mickey out of somebody else hard work. It was demeaning to the creator of that dso pic.
The magazine cover is representative of somebodies hard work, and the fact that its from a commercial enterprise doesnt make it any different in that plagerising and editing their work for a laugh might still be offensive to the author of that work. In fact that appears to be the case as the author deleted his original cover pic after seeing what others had done with it.
Regardless of the humour value of the edited versions, how would you feel if it was your pride and joy that was defaced and held to public ridicule in your own thread?
As for the point re advertising, there needs to be discussion as to what exactly is allowable as some do push the limits and maybe some strict guidelines need to be put in place.
