The crescent phases are always more pleasing to look at, rather than a full moon. A full moon is great naked eye, but through a telescope there's just no contrast, no shadows.
The shadows across the terminator really give you a feel for the depth of the craters and show you rilles and other details that you simply can't see when it's bathed in full sunlight.
