Not really knowing what is the best place...my guess would be to experiment. Try 2 sensors, one near edge, one near centre (rear of mirror of course), both at the same time.
Measure the delta (difference) between them...that way you can make an appropriate decision?
Anyway...FWIW that's what I'd do..
