I think most DSOs are small/big enough to fit on the chip, so most use prime focus. A x2 Barlow might help if the object is too small. that extra gubbins hanging off the focuser is not the best, plus all that extra glass to transit isn't helpful.
Most need a focal reducer to get in things like M42 and M45. I could do with a 6.3 for my LX90
