That's exactly the problem!
The cost of entry for novices is too high and not everyone is prepared to pay thousands of dollars for an instrument they may never master and has limited resale value.
In recognising this problem the Y! group astronomical_spectroscopy has designed a Littrow spectroscope Kit for less than $900. Hopefully it will encourage amateurs to "Boldly go......"
