Hi Dave,

It's a really good start, I noticed that you mentioned Afocal capture. This usually introduces lens chromatic aberration which can also make the picture look out of focus.

consider trying prime focus capture as you are not introducing any lens between the camera and errors of the scope.
To check if you have lens aberration get onto the programme either gimp or Photoshop and separate the red green and blue colours. If you find one of the colours is in focus and the other two are out of focus that would mean you are experiencing chromatic aberration.

Otherwise keep out of and like most people you will get there.

on the above yes you are correct it makes quite a big difference to get the focus right. In a lot of my later images I implemented a motorised focus and it worked brilliantly.
