I think most manufacturers of such plates prefer to work in aluminum because it keeps costs down and lighter, especially to ship etc...If it were possible, a stainless steel one would also be functional, look good and durable. I think steel is cheaper than aluminum these days.
What about multiple steel plating?. The top plate can be made to have a hole larger than the rest that corresponds to the indented recess in the plate. Possibly 8 squares of laser cut .25" steel plating?
It's incredible how a small component like a mounting plate could be so expensive.
I would keep looking around the net, there is a possibility that a component made for something else in the world would have the characteristics required and be more cost-effective. Even if you may have to drill new holes in the perimeter of the plate. I mean how hard could it be to find a nicely machined piece of 150mm Dia. x 50mm H. billet stock that you could drill yourself?
