Kstars needs the KDE desktop environment to run, Ubuntu uses Gnome. Kstars is part of the KDE desktop I think you can run KDE apps under Gnome but its a hassle. have you looked at LinuxMInt they have a new KDE version that's just been released and it based on Ubuntu. I tryed it and and downloaded Kstars from the download manger and it works OK for me.
