Silly question on my behalf, but what are you trying to focus on, something close or very distant, as this can make a difference.
Try holding (carefully) the eyepiece and simply moving it in and out by hand while looking through it, at a distant object. When it appears clear, see if the eyepiece in the focuser can be placed in the same position. A longer focal length eyepiece will be easier, something like the 25mm or so, rather than the 9mm.
