Sounds good to me. Start with a brush/cloth to remove major loose dust etc. If you can completely disassemble so that you have the teflon pads away from the surface (not sure if you are talking about Alt or Azi or both), you will be able to do the best job.

A good automotive silicon polish applied to the "rough" surface (Ebony Star or similar) will do wonders.
