A couple of questions Rob:
Was the filter fitted with a Tmax tuner? The Tmax looks like a hinged adapter for the filter with a little brass wheel on one side to tilt the Ha filter. If you didn't have that, then the Ha filter isn't tuned so that may explain why you're seeing no detail.
Did you use a blocking filter as well? I hope so. It is not safe to view the sun through the Ha filter alone. The blocking filter, may replace the diagonal or may look like a barlow depending on the type.
The other reason you may see no detail of course is if the scope is not focussed.
