Not all surges will cause burn marks or any visable damage. A small surge can do enough damage to chips/circuitry to either leave it still working (but doing odd things and fail later on) or in your case, enough damage to stop it working completely.

I saw this countless many times while working as a Computer Tech up in Darwin, which is one of the most lightning prone places in Australia.

It doesn't take a "hollywood electrical surge" to kill electronics.
