I saw a doco on the Forth Bridge. It's been a bit like the Sydney Harbour Bridge - the paint if from end to end and then start again.

They were "sandblasting" it to remove the umpteen layers of paint and rust and then using a fancy new paint that would last 20+ yrs. Only problem was that they needed to HAND undercoat each rivet before they sprayed on the top coat. 8 million rivets...
