I saw it in 3D at IMAX in Melbourne.
I think the special effects were excellent. And I agree with Chris on the soundtrack.
If you have a bit of cyberpunk in you, the piece could certainly take on a bit of an "arthouse" feel.
To be honest I think that it would be difficult to retain the feel of the original movie and push today's special effects to their limit. I expect the director understood this. The tempered approach that has been taken results in a good bout of nostalgia for those who have a soft spot for phosphorescent monochrome green and all the unrealised possibilities a slowly blinking cursor used to hold.
The plot was certainly the weak link, although for those among us that appreciate such things, I think a self aware digitally spawned Oliva Wilde (and/or Beau Garrett) almost made up for this. Especially when her skin tight outfit is rendered 88 feet tall in all its' neon glory.
