I've been doing it for the past 10 years. I have a golden rule with putting any additives in the tank: every action has a reaction. And don't get fooled into what could be a very expensive hobby - I came to learn a lot of the stuff is not necessary if you know what you're doing. Just make sure you cycle the tank to develop the all important bacteria for a good month with only a couple of fish to start with, then add fish slowly. The worst thing to do is add lots of fish first up, many will end up dying as the bacteria can't keep up in the early stages. Good luck with your new hobby!
