There is nothing wrong with developing version 2 before version 1 is released. I work for a software company and that is normal.
At the moment we have dev teams working on the 2011 releases and the next release after that of most of our products, that are not going to ship until 2012. We are also planning and experimenting with what is delivered in 2013 and beyond, so why any diff for a hardware company.
