Probably a couple of reasons Suzy. For one, many folks find the smoke really objectionable, not just cos of the smell and smoke but because what it in it. And two I don't imagine what is in the smoke would be good long term for optics, but probably no worse than normal cigarette smoke.
I had the misfortune to spend part of a night in a slide off roof observatory where the owner was burning a Tiger brand coil. It was horrendous.
