You could fit these neatly into the timber sides of the box. You drill a hole thru the timber & the "nut" is pressed / hammered into the timber from the INSIDE of the box. So it would be under your lining.
From the outside all you see is a neat hole the size of the bolt you are using.

I'm sure they'd be a std size thread & easy enough to find bolts for.
They're the ones I was thinking of Bryan, for the 'male' knobs.
Just trying to find the knobs at a reasonable price.
