You're on the money when you mention money, with regionalised players they effectively prevent you from buying overseas at cheaper prices. I seem to remember that the ACCC had something to say about the practice, deeming it "anti-competative".
I'm not sure whether it is still the case but Pioneer always supplied their DVD players to Australia with multi region capability, not sure if the same applies to their Blu-Ray Players.
