I have been on Face Book Now for over two years and have not bought a thing
I don't even notice if there is Advertising

As others have pointed out you can put as little or as much information as you want on your profile
I Was unsure at first but now am a a big user of FB.
I am no Spring Chicken but have embraced Face Book and enjoy keeping up with Old and New friends
As Mike said if you have never used it how can you judge it
