May I suggest the following kit and book from Willmann-Bell:

There are many other books but this one is all you need. You don't need a course, just follow the book.
An 8" is not much more difficult than a 6" to construct and I recommend the 8" complete Pyrex kit and the Texereau book since it describes the construction of an 8" f7 mirror.
DO NOT go with 10" or greater as your first mirror unless you have already made a smaller one.
Aluminising can be done at Chi Qin Co.
8" kit, book & one grating + post is less than $330USD. Not sure which grating is best; get both or ask Willmann-Bell. (Postage is expensive due to weight but overall cost is still quite good).
