The choice seems to be predominantly between Starry Night, and Sky X, on the Mac, and KStars under Linux. I've installed KStars on my little Ubuntu-powered netbook and it seems to run just fine, though as I haven't acquired a USB <-> RS-232 adapter yet, I can't test the scope-driving functionality.
I already have Starry Night Enthusiast (it came bundled with my copy of the "Universe" textbook, bought for an SAO course) but unfortunately one has to fork out for one of the "pro" versions to get instrument-driving capability.
Thus I will trial KStars on my netbook and see how it goes... if it's not quite good enough, upgrading Starry Night seems the better option.
Has anyone used The Sky X much?
