I recently bought a film strip/photo scanner from Target. It worked the first time I ran it (or so I thought). When I re installed it about 3 weeks later it could not find the scanner (I had a number of tries on different computers without succes) so I took it back for an exchange (I had lost the invoice) they did not have one so I was given a credit.
When I redeemed the credit for a new scanner I took it home and guess what. It had the same problem. I thought there must have been a problem with the driver so I looked at the disc, found the drivers and installed them manually. Works perfectly now. However I then seem to recollect that that is how I installed the driver the first time. Embarrassing isn't it.
