Nice report Rob. That guy reminds me of my journey, I too started with a rickety 60mm refractor, and graduated to a Meade 4.5" newt which to a 12 year old boy looked big and impressive! 10 Years later still got that 4.5 incher and she can take 200x on the moon in good conditions, and was the first scope I saw the Great Red Spot in.
I noticed several jet contrails here in Melb too, yesterday a jet was blasting out one mutha of a trail, probably departed Avalon as it was heading from that direction towards Sydney. There were a couple today aswell, big fat long lasting buggers, rarely seen here. Clearly indicative of the moisture in the atmosphere, which will inevitably lead to cloud and rain....
