Hi Chris,
I have CS3 and with it you have to specify in the RAW converter window that you want to export the image to Photoshop in 16 bits. This is done by changing the parameters in blue at the bottom of the Raw converter window ; you can change colour space, 16 or 8 bits, image size and pixels per inch.
