Jim,
it was my son (3 year old) that this year got me to take up something I had only thought of in earlier years (astronomy). He used to ask about the moon phases, so we got a used refractor and a new entry level (cheap) wide view eye piece with good eye relief and a filter. Your child is 20 months ...... so you have a little while to go.

We made the most of this winter so he could have a look at the moon before it got too far past his bed-time, so during summer, no obersving for him.

Definitely keep an eye on the used gear in the forum if you're not in a hurry, it has enabled us to keep the hobby affordable and end up with better gear on our budget then we normally would have.
