Hi Peter, some marks on or even damage to the lens coatings will make little difference to the views and you won't need to replace the lens.
Marks or residue inside the scope are likely to be oil or grease and therefore alcohol soluble - pure isopropyl or one of the commercial lens cleaners applied with pure cotton balls and no pressure would likely remove the marks.
As Trevor mentioned though, you need to supply more detail about exactly what you cleaned and what type of marks you were cleaning off the lens. Use a puffer, then a soft brush to remove any grit before cleaning with cotton balls.
