Army surplus stores usually have military style right angle torches, most of them come with a set of filters (including red) that store in a compartment on the base of the torch. They're usually available in 2x AA, 2x C and 2x D sizes and most can be had for between $7 and $20.

Many will have a clip behind the head and so can clip on your belt, shirt or jacket pocket, which helps if you need two free hands (the AA ones are really quite good for this) and the larger ones stand ok on a level surface.
