Not hard at all Michael, pure luck! On the ship, they did have eclipse photography (and viewing) tutorials in the days leading up to the eclipse, but it all seemed to make the event overly complicated so I stayed away from them.
Like I said in the other thread, when the first diamond ring was imminent (you could tell by the sky, and by the buzz in the crowd), I whipped the filter off the camera & just kept shooting using a wireless remote, with the same settings! The only time I looked at the camera (on tripod) was a couple of times to change the exposure setting, and a couple of times to check that the eclipsed sun was somewhere within the FOV.
