I have had similar experiences with geocities... if you haven't changed your site within x months (can't remember exactly how long) they declare the site dead regardless of how many hits the site may still be getting and they simply wipe it... gone!
I have just opened free account at
www.00homepage.com which ends up being topcities... time will tell how they perform...
