Guess I can count myself in the lucky category also. Saw one about 15yrs ago.
About 4pm one nice sunny afternoon in Sydney, I was getting out of my car to grab some cash at an ATM & being an appreciater of the sky etc took a lucky glance high into the sky, maybe 60degrees high and caught a bright meteor streaking across the sky.
It was glowing with a greeny tinge & had what looked like a vapour trail following it and was moving fairly slowly compared to say a leonid. I'd say I watched it for 3 or 4 seconds or so before it faded out. The trail remained for maybe another 10 seconds while I just stared, before picking my jaw off the ground.
I carried on to the ATM etc & on my way back to the car, a couple walked past me & I caught the tail end of a conversation with the girl trying to convince a guy she saw something in the sky & hes like yeah yeah bulls%#t. I told them I saw it as well & that it was a meteor etc, we had a quick chat about what we saw & they trodded off.
Amazing sight.
