I use the Baader UV/IR filter, but some of my best images have also been taken without it. If I understand it correctly the focus point for infra-red is sufficiently different from the red, and esp green and blue that if it isn't removed it will fuzz the image. That said, I think "seeing is king" and that if the seeing is less than optimal it may be hard to tell the difference.
